Change The Settings Of Your Junk Email Filter

Outlook 2003 has a new and improved junk email filter. All email that is considered to be junk will be put in the Junk E-mail folder. To change the settings of your junk email filter, just go to your Inbox, click Actions, then Junk E-mail, and then Junk E-mail options. There are four settings for the filter as described below:

  • No Automatic Filtering: This option is just what it sounds like. There is no filtering whatsoever, but mail from blocked senders will still be put in the Junk E-mail folder.
  • Low: This is the default setting. Only the most obvious junk email will be moved to the Junk E-mail folder.
  • High: This setting will catch most of the incoming junk, but might also catch some legitimate emails, so be careful! Be sure to check your Junk E-mail folder occasionally if you choose this option. Most electronic newsletters will be marked incorrectly as junk; however, you can add those senders to your trusted senders list to prevent them from being considered as junk in the future.
  • Safe Lists Only: The most restrictive setting possible. The only email you will receive will be from people or domains in your Contacts list or on your trusted senders list.
Even with the setting on the default low setting, you will find that Outlook will filter out about 90% of the junk email.
